Bell Labs Layered Space Time
While not actually desktop PC related, this piece of news has me very excited by the advances it will bring to our communications networks. The Australian arm of Bell Labs has developed a chip that uses the new wireless system called BLAST.  Able to receive a data transmission at up to 19.2 Mbps per second, it leaves the Mobile 3G network coughing dust. It may be two years before the public get to use it but it means smoother video conferencing and movie watching on your mobile phone, functions that have been poorly realised until now.

Optus Directline DSL
Optus are the first in Australia to start a Voice over DSL (VoDSL) service for small business.  The system allows you to have up to 8 voice lines over your DSL line, along with your high speed internet connection. So, no need for dial up connections, PABX systems or high line rental costs.
