CEBIT Computer Fair Darling Harbour Sydney

A short review by John Simpson of the CEBIT Darling Harbour Computer Fair convention
Cebit Australia Computer Trade convention at Darling Harbour was an interesting amalgamation of various available resources. Unlike several years ago when promotional material was thrown at you, it took a bit of pushing to actually get anything from the suppliers (and usually at the cost of your own business details) Everyone had swipe card machines so that you could be instantly added to a mailing list. (In some cases this was a good thing, in others where your only interest was to win a prize, this was a necessary evil)

Having said that I was impressed by the types of software available and have discovered several business services that would be useful for our customers.

I visited and interviewed several stalls but there was so many that 2.5 hours was not long enough. Amongst those worth a mention include:

Yoklb: A software program that stores information then produces quizzes, tests and other learning programs based on that information. Import those Unix study manuals today!

Paymate - an Australian equivalent to Paypal.

Penton Media - lots of free magazines

Internet.au - lots of free magazines.

Door to Door computers: Worth a mention because they have a similar focus to Electronic Desktop Solutions but are on the Gold Coast.

dnaml: who create digital web books

The system that blew me away was called 'Bob' which utilizes "the Microsoft Outlook and Exchange Server to record, organize, track and report on your organizations activities". Ben and I were given a demonstration regarding this powerful system and began discussions on distributing it within Sydney. (The company is Adelaide based) If you are interested in the system please let me know.

For novelty value, the Singapore company 'Microworks' produces business cards on mini cds. They call them eCards and can be several different shapes. They fit into a card holder or wallet and can contain a lot of information about your business or yourself. I fell in love with the idea straight away but the expense of getting them made and the hassle may mean it remains a novelty promotion. www.microworks.com.sg

The internet cafe set up in the centre of the main hall was a focal point for many. The computers were showcasing broadband technology. Which was great because Christine and I were able to watch movie trailers from the US in uninterrupted quality, and get a free coffee!

There were many other programs and technologies available to look at which made the trip to Darling Harbour worthwhile. Lets hope it was successful so that Cebit will be back next year, bigger and better.
